I will be teaching a class about teaching encaustics on Sat June 6, at 2pm at the Third Annual Encaustic Conference in Beverly MA. I am packing and getting ready to fly to the east coast on Thurs and am very excited to see everyone and join the buzz and fun of the conference. I will have some small paintings with me(see below) for sale. Catch me during the conference..(I can take credit cards..)

I have been working on a new series called Array, more grid based pieces. This new series is a slightly new direction for me.

I have some great shows lined up for 2009.

Including a SOLO show in San Francisco at A Woman's Eye Gallery, opening November 6. My work will be in a group show in June at Himmelberger Gallery downtown SF as well.

In July Judith and Lobos and I are driving up to the Bellevue Arts Museum show up in Washington, it was a fabulous show last year!

The Turchin Art Center in Boone NC has invited me to show with about 5 other artist including Mary Farmer and Mary Black in November

I was invited by curator Sandi Miot to show in Waxing Philosophical, in Marin at the Marin Community Foundation July-November...

This year I also curated Tangible Wax in Chicago and was the juror for Working in Wax at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek. I will be giving a lecture June 10 at 10 am about the show.

This new series, was inspired by book I was listening to in my studio (I read while I paint).
It was all about the Japanese Tea ceremony. As a ceramic artist I am very aware of the ethics and philosophy of the tea ceremony. I loved the book and I found that I started making work that was reminicent of the quiet meditation of Tea.
The color palette has been the same throughout, vermillions, reds, magenta, yellow, whites. The domes are placed, then surrounded by a circle of another color, then layers and layers of color.

Sometimes the domes fade out, then return I have about 40 paintings in the series so far and will paint until I have to start working on ceramics for the summer shows.

Tea House #86 and #88 were accepted in the show at the Lauryn Taylor Gallery in Carmel,"Off The Grid", which opens April 28.

I will be moderating the panel on "Materials", at the Encaustics COnference at Montserrat Colege of Art this June in Boston, and the "Collaborati Three" will be doing a presentation on how three artists can collaborate. Daniella Woolf and Cari Hernandez are the other artists.

Some new pieces I have been working on, back to the dots, combined with a center of texture, swirling energy. The detail shows the layers of colors, that creates the lines. Love that.

This is a new series I am calling Mneme,(ni-mann), it means memory. The "Untitled" series morphed into "Mneme". They are getting more complex, but may get simpler. I am in love with the rich oranges, yellows and reds. Dark purples are also appearing.

These new pieces are on deep cradled panels, and it gives them a presence on the wall. I am going to be painting for a few months, now that the holiday shows are over, and really dig into this series. I have some large panels, 18" x 48", ready to go.

Windows #8, 13"x17", encaustic on wood panel

I am going back to the "Windows" series. Got a great response at the American Craft Council Show in San Francisco, in Aug, so I am revisiting this use of the clear pools over images. The complexity is intruiging, and of course I love scraping through the layers. I am planning some really large pieces.

Open Studios in October, the 21, and 22, (22 is my birthday), at my studio. Also the "Wax Works" show at the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts is opening Oct 3, and Oct 7. www.west-coast-encaustic-artists.org I will be doing demos at the two openings.

I will be teaching an intro workshop Oct 15 at the O'Hanlon Center, including a docent tour of the show. This is a really great way to see lots of encaustic painting at the same time as learning the techniques. To register go to www.ohanloncenter.org

October 27,28,29 I will be at the Sacramento Arts Festival at the convention center.Booth #810.

Monday, Sept 18, I am setting off across the country to drive to Kansas City, Mo for the Plaza Art Show, www.countryclubplaza.com It was rated #5 in the country and they expect 300,000 people! I just hope I can get everything and me in the car. I have a brand new booth and will be showing mostly paintings, and ceramics of course.

Some new paintings in the untitled series, orange and red seemed to be the main colors in my last few paintings. I am using very thin veils of colors, over the texture and forms under the layers. When I do the scraping much is revealed. Seems like I am returning to some images from previous work, as it will do. Really liking these new pieces.

Had a very good show in Palo Alto this weekend, showed encaustics and ceramcis. Got a bunch of people interested in my July 23 workshop....

Some new paintings in the Untitled series. They are changing direction again, red line/pool coming from underneath, emerging, the lines are changing as well, bending. Staying with the red/orange/yellow colors with white under to reflect the color. The top one is a small 8"x8" the others are details from #52(full size is 22"x28").

The DVD is out. The "Artist i" showed on Comcast last week and I have copies. I sent out about 10 yesterday, I will ahve more next week. I am really happy with the film, and I was surprised and delighted with how it was edited and structured. I am going to get a portable DVD player and I will be playing it at shows. It shows me paintings, doing ceramics, drawing and of course talking...

My next show is the Palo Alto Clay and Glass at the Palo Alto Art Center , Newell and Embarcadero July 8,9. I will be showing paintings as well as ceramics. www.acga.net

And for other news.. Judith bought a scooter/moped yesterday. She took the Motorcycle driving class and passed all the tests. So we are going out driving! It is a Kymco, silver, very cute!

Untitled # 42 13"x32", encaustic on wood panel

This is a new piece part of the evolving "Untitled" series with carved lines. I am adding lots of texture and layers under the final lines, using all different kinds of mesh bags,(thanks Dani), and screen material. It creates distant, subtle patterns under the layers. I have many paintings in this group that I am about to photograph.

The Wexler Galllery in Philadelphia is now showing my paintings. They are part of the First Friday Gallery walk in Old Town and this Friday May 5, is the opening. If you are in the area please stop by to see the show. their website is www.wexlergallery.com
